What is an STI / STD?
STI stands for “Sexually Transmitted Infection,” while STD stands for “Sexually Transmitted Disease.” A STI / STD is transferred from person to person through sexual contact. Such an infection is caused by a bacteria, virus, or parasite that has entered your body and can then cause later symptoms and complications.
Why Should I Get Tested?
STIs / STDs can be spread through any type of sexual contact: vaginal, oral, and anal. However, many times you may not have or not notice symptoms right away.
- There are more than 25 different major STIs / STDs.
- At least 25% of Americans will contract an STI / STD at some time during their life.
- When you have had sex with someone, you have also been exposed to any STI / STD your partner’s past partners carried.
