Spring Break, Hookups, and Pregnancy Scares: What Are Your Next Steps?

  • by

Spring break is supposed to be a time to relax, have fun, and forget about school for a bit. But for some women, what happens over spring break leads to something else entirely: worry.

Maybe you hooked up with someone while drinking. Maybe you had sex with a friend or ex and now things feel really complicated. Maybe you aren’t even sure exactly what happened, but you feel uneasy. Maybe you came home from break and your period is late—or you’re afraid it might be.

If that’s you, you’re not alone. You’re also not the only one quietly wondering, “What if I’m pregnant?” or “Did I put myself at risk for an STD?”

You deserve a safe, non‑judgmental place to sort through what happened and what to do next.

First: Take a Breath

When you’re scared about a possible pregnancy or STD, your mind can start spinning. You might:

  • Check your period tracker over and over
  • Google symptoms late at night
  • Replay the night in your head and feel sick with worry

It’s normal to feel anxious, embarrassed, overwhelmed, or even ashamed—but you don’t have to stay stuck there.

You are allowed to ask questions, even if you feel like you “should’ve known better.” You are allowed to get support, even if you’re not sure what you want to do yet. You are allowed to take care of your physical and mental health, no matter what happened over break.

Step 1: Pregnancy Testing

If you had sex, pregnancy is a possibility.

A free, lab‑quality pregnancy test can help you move from “What if?” to a clear answer.

At Options for Women – River Falls, our pregnancy tests are free. We explain the results with you in person in a calm, home‑like setting. Your visit is confidential.

If your test is positive, we can talk through what that means, how far along you might be, and what your next steps can look like. For more on pregnancy symptoms and early development, you can also read our blog “What Happens in the First 7 Weeks of Pregnancy?” here:

Step 2: Limited Obstetrical Ultrasound

If your test is positive, the next step is often a limited obstetrical ultrasound.

A limited obstetrical ultrasound can:

  • Confirm that there is a pregnancy
  • Help estimate how far along you are
  • Help identify where the pregnancy is located (for example, to rule out concerns like ectopic pregnancy)
  • Give you a clearer picture of how early development is progressing

Once your test with us is positive, we can schedule a limited obstetrical ultrasound. The earliest we schedule ultrasounds is 5 weeks and 6 days, depending on how early the test was taken. If your test is earlier than that, we’ll plan your ultrasound for when you reach that point in your pregnancy.

If you’d like to learn more about what to expect from an ultrasound, you can visit our ultrasound information page here:

Step 3: STD Testing and Information

Spring break can involve new partners, casual hookups, and alcohol—all of which can increase your risk of STDs, even if you don’t have symptoms.

You may need STD testing if:

  • You had sex over break
  • Your partner has had multiple partners
  • You’re not sure about your partner’s sexual history
  • You shared needles or had other blood exposure

Some STDs don’t show signs right away, or ever, so “feeling fine” doesn’t always mean you’re in the clear.

At Options for Women – River Falls, we can talk through your situation and your risk, and help you understand what testing might be appropriate. You don’t have to figure this out by yourself or feel ashamed for asking.

Step 4: Talk About How You’re Really Doing

Pregnancy and STD scares don’t just affect your body. They affect your mind and emotions, too.

You might be having trouble sleeping or eating. You might feel waves of anxiety, dread, or regret. You might be worrying about what this means for school, sports, or your relationships. You might feel pressure from a partner, friends, or family— or feel like you can’t tell anyone at all.

Those feelings are real, and they matter.

At Options for Women – River Falls, you can sit down with someone who will listen without judgment, provide information about pregnancy and abortion so you’re not relying only on the internet or friends, and walk with you as you decide what your next steps will be. We believe every person is made in the image of God and deserves care, honesty, and respect—especially when they’re scared.
