(When You’re Excited and a Little Freaked Out)
Starting college can feel like stepping into a whole new world.
One minute you’re buying notebooks and decorating your room, the next you’re staring at your schedule wondering, “How am I supposed to be a real adult now?”
If you’re excited and a little freaked out, you’re normal. Here are a few things you can expect—and some gentle reminders for along the way.
1. Expect everything to feel new
New campus. New professors. New people. New routine.
The first few weeks can feel like a blur. You might get lost walking to class. You might forget where you put your student ID. You might sit alone in the dining hall and feel awkward.
None of that means you’re doing it wrong. It just means you’re doing something new.
Give yourself time to find your spots: a quiet corner in the library, a coffee shop that feels cozy, a path you like to walk. Routines come with repetition, not perfection.
2. Expect your emotions to surprise you
College isn’t just about classes. It’s about change.
You might miss home more than you thought. Or you might not miss it at all and feel weird about that. You might feel lonely in a crowd. You might feel pressure to be “on” all the time.
Stress, less sleep, and big life changes can make emotions feel louder.
That doesn’t mean you’re broken. It just means your heart and mind are processing a lot. Talking to someone safe—friend, mentor, pastor, counselor—can help you sort through it.
3. Expect pressure—but remember you still get to choose
You’ll probably see and hear a lot about parties, hookups, and “college stories.”
Some people act like sex is just part of college. You might feel pressure to do things you don’t feel peace about, just to fit in or not be “the weird one.”
Here’s the truth: you still get to choose what lines you won’t cross.
You are allowed to have boundaries. You are allowed to say no. You are allowed to want something different for your life, your body, and your future—no matter what people around you are doing.
If a situation, relationship, or expectation doesn’t line up with your values, it’s okay to step back.
4. Expect to learn what you really need
Part of freshman year is figuring out what helps you stay grounded.
You might realize you need more sleep than you thought. Or that going outside for ten minutes does more for your mood than scrolling for an hour. You might notice you feel better after church, journaling, or talking with one solid friend.
Pay attention to the things that make you feel more like yourself—and lean into those.
When it all feels like “too much”
If some of your stress is tied to pregnancy worries, STD questions, relationship stuff, or feeling stuck about what to do next, you don’t have to carry that alone.
